Not so Pension Wise, after all?

The government apparently spent £18 million last year advertising “Pension Wise”, its free advice service, designed to make sure that, following pension freedoms, the unadvised don’t squander what savings they have. However, only 7% of those planning to retire have so far used the service. And, just as it’s the already healthy who’ll take advantage of free health checks, it’s those who can afford advisers who tend to use Pension Wise, simply because they can. So, another good use of your hard-paid taxes.

In an election year, all parties will try to be all things to all men. Mostly, it’s only stuff which matters ‘on the doorstep’ which matters. In isolation, Mrs Miggins (not my invention) will be delighted that her pension has gone up with the highest measure of inflation; and no one running a business will be complaining that National Insurance has been reduced.
