Who knew there were so many Russians living in our midst, in fear of their lives? As non-EU citizens, what traumas, I wonder, did they go through on arrival in the UK? Did they, like refugees from many other countries, spend months in detention centres trying to prove that they’d face torture or death if they returned to their homeland? Did their ability to buy large central London properties for cash smooth the process at all? I somehow doubt they troubled either Amnesty or the UNHCR.

The answer to the headline question should be, of course, a big, fat ‘Yes!’ Of course you can, and many do, always say ‘Doesn’t matter what we do it’s China/America/Everyone Else who’s causing all the problems and making electric cars and all the electricity they use is just as harmful and even if we recycle stuff it all gets dumped in the sea in Third World countries anyway…’
