Here’s another tax change which, as often rehearsed on these pages, has been on the cards for 40 years or more but never happened. The ditching of high rate tax relief on pensions has been a budget rumour for as long as I’ve taken notice of budgets (sort of happens when you’re 20-something and realise you’re paying tax). The difference isn that we now have a) a brave Chancellor (who knew?) b) with support from the ABI, which represents the big pension companies who c) needs to raise cash without upsetting the Northern Powerhouse working man and woman. Seems to me like a shoo-in-no-brainer this time around.

In an election year, all parties will try to be all things to all men. Mostly, it’s only stuff which matters ‘on the doorstep’ which matters. In isolation, Mrs Miggins (not my invention) will be delighted that her pension has gone up with the highest measure of inflation; and no one running a business will be complaining that National Insurance has been reduced.
