I’m usually asked by those about to retire ‘how much can I get from my pension?’ My answer nowadays is ‘how much do you need?’, as pension freedoms mean you can draw down as you wish. We need to make sure you don’t run out of money; but the opposite, it seems, is the case. Far from blowing it all, many are far more careful than they need to be. In reality, most of us won’t end up with expensive care home bills, will try a cruise once and realise they’re ghastly (that’s probably just me) and spend more on Gardeners World than fast living. So the message is, live a little while you can. When you can. Which is not now, of course.

In an election year, all parties will try to be all things to all men. Mostly, it’s only stuff which matters ‘on the doorstep’ which matters. In isolation, Mrs Miggins (not my invention) will be delighted that her pension has gone up with the highest measure of inflation; and no one running a business will be complaining that National Insurance has been reduced.
