Governments don’t have the best of track records when it comes to organising or commissioning computer systems. Look at past, costly shambles in the NHS, HMRC, universal credit, and, more recently the contact tracing app. Now they have to get a new, digital customs system working in less than six months, apparently from a standing start. This and the new border checks are going to cost £790bn. Sorry, are going to cost us £790bn. I rather think my Waitrose bills will be increasing exponentially next year as well; assuming anything actually gets off the M20 and onto the shelves.
