I can hear the questions now: ‘I’m always reading about people who’ve had money in pensions and have lost the lot”. “These SIPPs are really dodgy, aren’t they? Why are you recommending one to me?”. A pension or SIPP is no more ‘dodgy’ than an empty room. The room could be filled with cushions and nice, chilled bottles of rosé; or a mugger in a hoodie with a box of snakes. And your pension could be invested in a nice, safe, managed fund; or a non-existent plantation of trees in Australia. You wouldn’t and shouldn’t walk into either of the latter.

In an election year, all parties will try to be all things to all men. Mostly, it’s only stuff which matters ‘on the doorstep’ which matters. In isolation, Mrs Miggins (not my invention) will be delighted that her pension has gone up with the highest measure of inflation; and no one running a business will be complaining that National Insurance has been reduced.
