The ‘Day pension vultures swooped on our steelworkers’ headline is, of course, from the Daily Mail.  Those ‘vultures’, the one’s legally allowed to advise on pension transfers, are probably the most highly regulated and scrutinised in our business. If the pension scheme is allowing transfers out arranged by unregulated advisers to unregulated pension schemes, shame on them. And if the pot being transferred is pretty large, it would be criminal were they to be advised to put it all in cash. Investing in stocks and shares is one of the many ways in which the rich get richer. If the steel men (and ladies) are properly advised, it could be their, and their families, big chance, too.

In an election year, all parties will try to be all things to all men. Mostly, it’s only stuff which matters ‘on the doorstep’ which matters. In isolation, Mrs Miggins (not my invention) will be delighted that her pension has gone up with the highest measure of inflation; and no one running a business will be complaining that National Insurance has been reduced.
