It’s the oldest political trick in the book: blame the immigrants or anyone who’s not ‘one of us’. The Nazis, Mugabe and Amin went for the wealthy others. Powell, Farage, Trump and many more went and go for the poor, supposedly stealing our jobs, fleecing health services and benefits systems. The former two thankfully never had and never will have office. The latter, however has. And may have for another five years.

Are workers working from home more or less productive than those catching the 7.02am to London Bridge every day? ‘Probably sitting at home in their bleedin’ jim-jams’, said someone recently of a less-than-helpful call centre employee, the assumption being that, were they surrounded by colleagues and with a manager cracking the whip, he or she would have sorted his energy bill more efficiently.
