Under the Marketing of Investments and Financial Instruments Directive No. 2, it’s become a regulatory requirement that financial advisers see their clients each year. Imagine how much healthier we’d be if GPs had to do the same? However, our regulator would look quizzically over their lorgnette if they thought we were trying to manage more than a couple of hundred clients; GPs have an average of over 1600. And most of my colleagues would feel stretched were they to see more than 2 or 3 a day; GPs see 30-40! It’s a funny old world.

Years ago when I worked in Greece, families used to fly their poorly relatives to London to get better medical treatment. Now it’s cheaper, even with the cost of flights and hotels, to go to Lithuania for a hip replacement and Hungary or Turkey for a bit of dental work.
