Here (to me) is an argument for nationalisation. Am I alone in preferring to work an extra hour a week, rather than spend a day a year saving £50 a year on my electricity/gas/broadband/water/haircut (well, maybe not, if you know me) etc. One hour of that day would be spent finding the cheaper deal, several more making it work, and several more changing back to the original deal when it doesn’t. Whatever they tell you.  Sometimes there’s a lot to be said for a lack of choice.

Are workers working from home more or less productive than those catching the 7.02am to London Bridge every day? ‘Probably sitting at home in their bleedin’ jim-jams’, said someone recently of a less-than-helpful call centre employee, the assumption being that, were they surrounded by colleagues and with a manager cracking the whip, he or she would have sorted his energy bill more efficiently.
