Someone, somewhere always makes money, and very often it’s a hedge fund manager. Even those who work for them have trouble explaining exactly what they do, very quickly talking about shorting this and going long on that. They basically make bets, some big and some small, on whether and when stuff,  shares, currencies, markets, will go up or down. It’s a world where knowledge is both power and money. In this case, probably the most famous/infamous of their number made the calculation that one effect of Trussenomics would be to send the value of government bonds into freefall and cashed in accordingly. An effect, interestingly, predicted by former hedge fund manager, Rishi Sunak. And perhaps discussed by the Chancellor himself at the champagne reception he attended with hedge fund managers on the evening of his mini-budget. You may think that, I couldn’t possibly comment…
