I heard a wise Irishman say some wise things shortly after The Referendum. He’s an economist who made the point that he’s unusual, as Ireland has won 5 Nobel prizes for literature but none for economics. He said that, post-Brexit, we Brits will need to change our attitude, becoming a ‘soft’ power. We’ll need to focus on conquering the world through music, literature, and the arts, as we did in the days of the Beatles and Monty Python, becoming self-deprecating rather than arrogant as, goodness knows, we’ll have little about which to be arrogant. Bet you can name more artists, authors and composers from past centuries, or even the 1960s, than you can businessmen and bankers. That’s why governments should support the arts. Even now. I’d say.
