I remember various ‘uncles’ (real or otherwise, everyone was ‘uncle’ then) of my parents’ generation who hated their jobs and spent years counting down to the day they could claim the gold-plated pension which made the misery worthwhile. One didn’t make it to retirement; another had just five toil-free years. Those comfortable pensions are disappearing with their recipients, but maybe that’s not the reason that so many are delaying retirement. Is it such a bad thing that staying in one job with one employer is a thing of the past? I doubt it’s something the next generation consider, even if they had the choice. And perhaps their lives will be all the richer for it.

In an election year, all parties will try to be all things to all men. Mostly, it’s only stuff which matters ‘on the doorstep’ which matters. In isolation, Mrs Miggins (not my invention) will be delighted that her pension has gone up with the highest measure of inflation; and no one running a business will be complaining that National Insurance has been reduced.
