Government attempts to tinker around with markets have, over the years, been as spectacularly unsuccessful as most parents attempts to bribe or coerce teenaged children. Remember MIRAS, tax relief on mortgage interest? Brought in to boost home ownership, it sent house prices through the roof, then, when it went, through the floor. They never learn. Its latest incarnation, Help to Buy, has sent prices through the roof, build quality through the floor and lined the pockets of the bosses. A £110m bonus? You can bet, like others before them, they won’t be seen for dust when the whole thing goes belly-up.
