Saj left because he refused to fire his advisers. Maybe it was they who were advising him to have a major tinker-around (every chancellor has a go) with pensions. The problem i,s no chancellor’s tinkering has ever been properly thought through. This means that either pages of exceptions and exemptions have to be added to the rules; or, as in the case of doctors and the annual allowance, they’re hit by the law of unexpected consequences. The lesson of history, of course, is that no-one ever learns the lessons of history. So expect the worst.

In an election year, all parties will try to be all things to all men. Mostly, it’s only stuff which matters ‘on the doorstep’ which matters. In isolation, Mrs Miggins (not my invention) will be delighted that her pension has gone up with the highest measure of inflation; and no one running a business will be complaining that National Insurance has been reduced.
