This isn’t rocket science. There’ll soon be more parents than kids and old parents are more expensive than kids, as it turns out. The reality which most acknowledge is that either we pay more or it’s every man and woman for him or herself; we become like a third world country or, worse still, America. If we could trust any government to spend our taxes wisely, most of us would happily pay. Remember what National Insurance was supposed to be for?

Years ago when I worked in Greece, families used to fly their poorly relatives to London to get better medical treatment. Now it’s cheaper, even with the cost of flights and hotels, to go to Lithuania for a hip replacement and Hungary or Turkey for a bit of dental work.
