Not to put too fine a smug-zone point of it, we never recommended Neil Woodford’s funds, when he set up on his own; and moved clients out of the once-great funds he managed at Invesco when he left. With fund managers, I’ve always assumed the Gary Barlow effect will apply: great as part of a group, but rather lost as a solo artist. There’s the occasional Spice Girl, couple of hits, but never quite the same and, OK, you miss the occasional Rod and Robbie. But best, I think, to go with the odds, where your, our clients’, money is concerned.
