Certain loud motoring journos have argued for years that our speed limits should be increased, because cars are so much safer these days. The Institute of Economic Affairs has said that it would increase road capacity and could significantly boost trade and economic activity. More people would die, of course. With our current limits, the actual average speed on motorways is 80mph, and 38 in most 30mph zones. Look at scenes from Oxford Street and Bicester village this week, and you can see that most already don’t give a proverbial about the 2m limit because, of course, it won’t happen to them. Bring it down to 1m and you might as well call it a day. I’d say.
