This, I think, is outrageous, yet has barely troubled the BBC, tabloid nor even broadsheet headlines. ‘Education secretary Gavin Williamson says the money will be directed instead towards Stem subjects’. No, me neither; it’s ‘Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics’. Arts and culture are the ‘soft powers’ for which we’re recognised and pretty good at as a nation, and always have been. Let’s face it, we were rubbish at the Olympics until money was thrown at our sportspeople; and came up with vaccines only when they became the focus of government attention (and money.) Stop funding arts education, and we’ll be the poorer for it. And the talented poorer will no longer get a look in at it.
