Most parents have resorted to bribery to keep kids from fighting in the back of the car. It works for a while; then the ‘he pinched me’s start again and even bigger bribes have to be dished out to keep the peace. Then you run out of sweets and resort to shouting, stopping the car and threatening to leave someone in a lay-by. In this analogy, Phil and Theresa are the parents, and we, collectively, are the kids. It’s more likely, however, that they’ll be the ones who get out of the car and disappear through the hedge never to be seen again. Leaving us to try and find our way home.
