Another marriage which from an employee point of view, is unlikely to be made in heaven, is that of Asda and Sainsburys. Do they really think we’re daft enough to believe that they’re going to leave stores in the same town, let alone the same street, in place to compete against one another in their brave new world of ’synergised buying power’? Either Sainsburys will move down-market or Asda up, or they’ll meet in the middle, but please don’t treat us (and your staff) like total numpties!

In an election year, all parties will try to be all things to all men. Mostly, it’s only stuff which matters ‘on the doorstep’ which matters. In isolation, Mrs Miggins (not my invention) will be delighted that her pension has gone up with the highest measure of inflation; and no one running a business will be complaining that National Insurance has been reduced.
