Although, as votes for the far right prove, not all Germans are happy with their government, they’re a lot happier than we are. Apparently, less than a third of us think May & Co are doing a good job but only the Italians significantly more hacked off than we are. They generally, however, don’t like the idea of or see the need for having a government at all. Perhaps they’re on to something…

The ‘lag’, ‘trailing leg’ or ‘long wake’ of any economic measure means that its effects are often felt long after the problem it was supposed to solve has disappeared. 2010’s ‘balancing the books within the space of one parliament’ (that went well, didn’t it?), austerity to you and me, is one example.
