You can’t libel a dead person, as they can’t answer back. You can, however, tax them, for much the same reason. In what is effectively a hike to Inheritance Tax, probate fees are being increased, from a flat £215 to a tiered, stamp duty-style percentage of up to £6,000. You may remember that this was due to happen but was dropped before Mrs May’s super-snap-election last year. “HMRC scraps plans to tax pensions after death”

A couple of other Statement Highlights (in my world, anyway). A welcome ‘nothing happened’ on the treatment of pensions on death. They were never going to be liable to IHT (too complicated with trusts and trust law) but there was talk of making them income-taxable on the recipients at whatever age you die.
