All week I’ve been asked ‘what’s this about becoming Irish?’ followed by ‘how can I do it?’ by those on both sides of the Brexit divide. The what and why is that I can remain (sic) an EU citizen as, hopefully, can my children. Thus we can continue to work/live/travel/get healthcare/not have to wait for hours at passport control, in 27 countries. It works both ways, you see, something the Dally Mail often forgets to mention. The how? In the case of Ireland, fill in some forms and be lucky enough to have an Irish parent or grandparent. Although some from previous generations of my Belfast family would, I’m sure, banish me as a Fenian. Sorry, Uncle Tom and thanks for your understanding, Dad!
