All of my family sleep with mobiles within reach. For me, it’s my alarm clock, tells me bedtime stories and sings me to sleep. Yes, I do panic if I forget to take it out with me. If there’s an emergency, how else can I dial 999? Knock on someone’s door? Would you answer in the middle of the night? If my daughter forgets to charge hers, yes, I worry. It’s a scary world out there if you’re a teen’s dad. Notice, however that my generation’s biggest worry is not being able to make calls; the thing for which mobiles are now least used…

Are workers working from home more or less productive than those catching the 7.02am to London Bridge every day? ‘Probably sitting at home in their bleedin’ jim-jams’, said someone recently of a less-than-helpful call centre employee, the assumption being that, were they surrounded by colleagues and with a manager cracking the whip, he or she would have sorted his energy bill more efficiently.
