The doom is starting to overtake the gloom in predictions of the state of the economy post-it-all. Will half of us be out of a job when the government stops paying salaries? Well, some will be, but many won’t and my glass of rosé is more than half-full on this one. Leaving aside the dire social-distancing and virus-revival indications, the crowds flocking to beaches, parks and illegal barbies are just as likely to flock back to the shops and to doing everything they were before just as they did it before. Less will change, for better or worse, than expected. I’d say.

This week’s big economic and bad election news is that we are, or certainly have been, officially in a recession. You may not have thought you were, or you may have thought you have been for some time, as we and its effects are all different.
