This is a pretty big turnaround and certainly the result of hours of marketing meetings with rubbing-their-hands ad agency types. For thirty years or more, St James Place (née J Rothschild Assurance) has justified high charges with swanky offices, brass plates and leather sofas. And the result, love’em or loath’em, one of the most consistently profitable financial services businesses. Can they square the circle of Tesco appeal and Waitrose prices? Doubt it; but we’ll see.
