The last December election was in 1923 (parents ask your grandparents), when PM Stanley Baldwin ‘felt the need to receive a mandate from the people, which, if successful, would strengthen his grip on the Conservative Party leadership’. Then, as now, it was thought that any potential Labour-voting ditherers wouldn’t come out on cold, dark rainy days. The result, however, was a hung parliament and the first Labour government, helped by the Liberals. Just sayin’.
