It’s easy to forget what a world of plenty we’ve enjoyed (on the cheap) for the past 30-odd years. When we lost our empire after the war, rationing meant you just couldn’t buy stuff. When I grew up in the 60s and 70s, exotic fruit came in tins, olive oil from the chemist and lasagne would never have been basic pub grub. Well, it didn’t come in a basket, did it. We now expect to buy fresh passion fruit at the corner shop and whatever else we want, whenever we want it. Well, that won’t change. It will all just be a heck of a lot more expensive. As it probably always should have been.

This week’s big economic and bad election news is that we are, or certainly have been, officially in a recession. You may not have thought you were, or you may have thought you have been for some time, as we and its effects are all different.
