Maggie and Sid’s (kid’s etc) clever trick when the denationalised everything in the ‘80s was to offload the gold-plated BT/British Rail/British Airways etc pension schemes to the shiny, new private companies. All closed now, of course to new employees, but as we saw with British Steel, a major financial noose around the neck of even the most giant of companies. Perhaps, like the Gove and Johnson Brexit gang, they’re assuming they won’t win and so will cross that bridge only if they have to…

Are workers working from home more or less productive than those catching the 7.02am to London Bridge every day? ‘Probably sitting at home in their bleedin’ jim-jams’, said someone recently of a less-than-helpful call centre employee, the assumption being that, were they surrounded by colleagues and with a manager cracking the whip, he or she would have sorted his energy bill more efficiently.
