I’ve had one or two nice holidays in Dubai, when the exchange rate was a tad better and before it became a go-to destination for Premiership footballers and TOWIE stars.  And it’s an interesting place, aiming, as it does, to be a sort of desert New York. It famously has no oil, so has to make its money in other ways to its neighbours; which has led to all sorts of stories of through-flows of cash from murky places with very different climates to its own. So I don’t think its reputation will be enhanced by this week’s news  of the opening of new ‘trade offices’ in both Panama and Columbia. But needs must, and we, too, need all the new trading partners we can find. Off you go, Boris.

Are workers working from home more or less productive than those catching the 7.02am to London Bridge every day? ‘Probably sitting at home in their bleedin’ jim-jams’, said someone recently of a less-than-helpful call centre employee, the assumption being that, were they surrounded by colleagues and with a manager cracking the whip, he or she would have sorted his energy bill more efficiently.
