The man who invented plastic bags thought he was doing us all a favour, saving trees and forests rather than choking whales. They were supposed to (and of course, will) last forever and mean we’d never need paper bags again. The unintended consequence was the creation of an industry with a vested interest in ensuring we only used them once.
