I know that every minister wants to leave a legacy, but come on. Pensions Minister Guy Opperman (who knew?) ‘wants it to become normal for people to meet in a pub, and have a frank conversation about their pensions with their friends’. Well, a) if you spark up a frank conversation about pensions in the pub, you won’t have many friends. That’s why most financial advisers keep quiet about what they do unless pushed. And b), making pension companies send out yet more paperwork, however supposedly user friendly it may be (and it won’t be, of course), will just fill more recycling bins. I’d say I despair, if there weren’t so many other, more important things, about which to despair.

In an election year, all parties will try to be all things to all men. Mostly, it’s only stuff which matters ‘on the doorstep’ which matters. In isolation, Mrs Miggins (not my invention) will be delighted that her pension has gone up with the highest measure of inflation; and no one running a business will be complaining that National Insurance has been reduced.
