While I was on hols there, I read up on Turkish politics. Their President Erdogan started as mayor of Istanbul, became PM, then changed their system a couple of years ago from parliamentary democracy to executive presidency, with help from a far-right party; so he can now get on with stuff without annoying MPs getting in the way. When the opposition won a key election in March, he demanded a rerun and lost second time around by an even bigger margin. All very interesting.
