Apparently the ‘average worker’ saves a tad under £300 per month for their retirement; in most cases because they’re auto-enrolled in an employer’s pension scheme. Interestingly, that was about the average thirty years ago when I was a boy adviser. The big difference is, that £300 was in addition to their (free) final salary pension (kids, most definitely, ask your parents). So either, yes, be very afraid. Or accept that retirement, like national service and corporal punishment, will become a thing of the past which your granddad will say ‘never did me any harm’…

On my 50th birthday, I will always remember, amongst the card or two I received was a letter from Saga’ who’d managed to find out my age through the wonder of the internet, and were pleased to tell me I now qualified to join my parents and go on holiday with them.
